Feature Project - Northpoint Condos

We recently photographed Northpoint, a new residential condo complex in Cambridge MA. We made three trips to ensure the sun would be in the correct location for exterior and interior views within and around the buildings.

Our first trip was combined with another project in the area, with savings passed on to both clients. We scouted the location and selected the appropriate views and spaces for photography.

Our second trip included a full day of photography: exterior images of two buildings through out the day as the sun moved around them, two model units, two lobbies and a light court photographed in between the exterior views. Having both a photographer and assistant on-site allowed us to set up an interior while simultaneously photographing the exterior.

Once the landscaping had matured we made a third visit which was combined with another project as well. We photographed the exterior of both buildings from a distance to show the relationship of the buildings and the surrounding landscape.

Education - Business Pratices

We constantly look for ways to do things better. In February, Lynne spent three days at the Bradshaw Leadership Conference in Detroit held by the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP). 100 professional photographers participated in a variety of workshops geared toward making us better leaders in our industry.

Besides photography, one of our passions is teaching. It's a way for us to keep up with changes in technology and trends, give back to the community and mentor emerging/exisiting photographers which helps our profession in numerous ways.

In March, Lynne will teach two full time modules at Boston University's Center for Digital Imaging Arts in Waltham MA: Business Fundamentals of Photography and Interior Architectural Photography. For the business module, students will work on marketing ideas, professional relations via role-playing, and create an actual business plan to help them move forward after graduation. The architectural module will incorporate location photography for real projects. Learn more about CDIA here: www.cdiabu.com.

Photo Tip - Snow and Ice

Have you ever tried photographing the winter landscape? Are you pleased with the resulting images? Snow and ice can be some of the most difficult subjects to contend with. Below are a few tips and tricks to make your photographs as clear and crips as a winters day!

  • Keep your camera protected from moisture and falling snow with a plastic bag wrapped around the body secured with an elastic band. Create a hole in the bag for the lens and use a protective filter if one is available for your lens.
  • Batteries have a shorter life span in cold weather. Warm them in your jacket pocket and switch between two sets to keep both up to temperature. You'll gain several hours of additional shooting this way.
  • Proper exposure for the white of winter can be done several ways to avoid a gray looking image. One way is to fill the frame with a patch of snow and meter the scene and adjust the +/- symbol for the type of lighting listed below. Depending on the angle of the light and texture in the snow, add exposure compensation when setting your camera.
    • For a gray sky day add +2.5 to +3.0 for exposure compensation.
    • For a bright clear day add +1.5 to +2.0 for exposure compensation.
    • For an overcast but bright day add +1.0 for exposure compensation.
    • Select the scene mode "Snow" in your camera's program menu for an approximate exposure compensation.

Bundle up and get outside early for the best winter light. You'll be rewarded with warm colors and raking sunshine - Enjoy!
