DigiGrey - For Accurate Neutral Reference

An accurate, neutral reference is critical to creating digital images that reproduce colors as they appear to our eyes. The old-fashioned 18% paper gray card was created for film and isn't intended for digital imaging. We thought we could create a solution for the digital age, so we did!

We created four DigiGrey products in response to a need for affordable, neutral references for photographers and videographers to correct color/white balance in digital images. DigiGrey products are for everyday studio and location use, and come with a lifetime warranty on the card (strap excluded).

Color is no longer in the hands of the lab – get control of your color-balancing act with DigiGrey! For more information or to order DigiGrey products, check out our newly launched web store: www.DigiGreyShop.com

Bancroft at 100 - Centennial Book Project

To celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the Bancroft Building where our studio is located, Lynne will self-publish a book about the building and its approximately 100 residents, including 70 artists that call Fountain Street Studios their business, creative escape or artistic community. The former automobile and apparel factory has been transformed into a creative community we are proud to call home.

You may be interested in reading a short article about the Bancroft Building written by one of our resident oil painters, Roy Perkinson. Visit www.FountainStreetStudios.com and click on the link titled "Bancroft Building History" in the lower right hand corner.

The Bancroft Building will also be a part of the Framingham History Center House tour on Sunday afternoon, May 16, 2010. For more information about the book project and tour, stay tuned to future issues of DPeNews.

Selecting a Tripod

Camera manufacturers are in the business of selling the "next best thing" to make your images better/sharper/more lifelike/etc. In recent years we have been overwhelmed with cameras and lenses that include image stabilization and vibration reduction. Technology can be a wonderful thing, but when you want sharp images, a solid tripod and good technique is the answer.

When selecting a tripod, a heavier leg set will always keep your camera steadier than a light one. You also want to keep the number of leg sections to a minimum. As the leg tubes get smaller the maximum load they can support is less. These considerations may change if you need a tall tripod or one that will fold into a bag for travel.

  • Studio photographer – Look for a camera stand support on wheels, rigid and mobile. Check out Arkay.
  • Nature photographer – weight is an issue. Carbon fiber is a great solution if you can justify the price. Check out Gitzo, Manfrotto (Bogen), Giottos, Induro or Slik.
  • Do you use telephoto lenses regularly? A sturdy leg set is key to sharp images from long lenses. Consider a large Gitzo or even a wood tripod (Ries, Berlebach) to dampen vibration.
  • Amateur/Hobbyist – price is a concern. Aluminum leg sets offer the best price to weight ratio. Check out Gitzo, Manfrotto (Bogen), Gittos, Induro or Slik.

Camera supports comes in many different sizes, price ranges and weights. Visit your local camera store to check stock or try out any of the suggested tripods. We recommend E.P. Levine and Zeff Photo Supply.
