We teach to all skill levels in a variety of topics from basic camera operation to photography tips and techniques for specific situations. Individual workshops are a great way to refine your photography process and learn the answers to your specific questions. Are you looking to break into the photography market? Assisting is an excellent way to learn from a working professional photographer and get hands-on experience. This workshop will give you the tools you need to jump into a project and know what needs to be done. The best assistants anticipate the photographer’s needs before words are spoken. Learn how to prepare a location or product for photography, how to identify concerns before they become issues, gear needed, time management, cleaning and organization tips, as well as “best practices” every assistant should know. A handout will be provided.

Creating photographs is largely a solo experience. After a while you may realize you’re the only decision maker building your portfolio. If you are in need of creative or technical feedback on your work and progression, an individual portfolio review is the answer. How do you want to grow as a photographer? We can help you develop your vision, edit your portfolio, hone in on your key themes and subjects, and identify techniques and approaches, which are working and those that are not. We invite both digital and printed portfolios for review.

Learn how to become comfortable with your camera. This course will unmask the secrets to creating more compelling images, whether you have owned a digital SLR for years or just received a point and shoot camera as a gift. You will learn how to get the most out of your camera using appropriate settings and menus for various subjects as your picture-taking skills improve throughout the course. Note: camera should have aperture and shutter priority modes.

We will cover:

  • How to brighten or darken photographs in camera
  • Color (white balance)
  • Flash settings
  • Focal length
  • Program, aperture and shutter priority, and manual modes
  • Light modification
  • What to put in your gear bag
  • and more!

All skill levels welcome! Includes a field trip (location TBD by class). Transportation not provided. Bring your manual (review it before the first class), charged batteries and camera to each class. There will be a photography assignment each week to do on your own that will be used as a learning tool in the following class.

Do you wonder why the color and brightness of your photographs don’t match your artwork? Do you need better images of your work for a portfolio or exhibit submission? Learn how to photograph your art with more accurate, professional results!

We will demonstrate each step involved, even with only the most basic camera. Lighting, white balance, camera angle, lens polarization and appropriate focal length will be covered. You will leave with a foundation for successful photography of your artwork.

The workshop will take place in a gallery setting, giving participants the opportunity to learn to take effective installation shots as well. Basic knowledge and familiarity with your camera (whether SLR or point-and-shoot) is required.

Bring your camera and fresh batteries, camera manual, and tripod if you have one plus a 2-D or 3-D work of art to photograph (optional). Handouts will be provided.

Light Modification in Garden Photography

Do heavy shadows, harsh contrast or inappropriate color detract from your garden photographs? Add, reduce or modify light to enhance your natural subjects using reflectors, diffusers, flash, exposure compensation and white balance. Simple but effective techniques will be shared in a slide show and then demonstrated, followed by group and individual photography time with the instructor. We will photograph in the beautiful surroundings outdoors or inside at Tower Hill and have some time to review our photos as a group. Handouts will be provided. We will meet rain or shine.

Bring your camera and lens(es), camera manual and freshly charged batteries. This class is suitable for photographers already familiar with the basic menus and controls on their camera, whether DSLR or point-and-shoot.
